How to Become a CBP Agent

Check to make sure you meet the minimum requirements for application. You must be a U.S. citizen with no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence. You must have resided in the U.S. continuously for the three years before application. You must be under 40 years old when you are selected, though this requirement can be waived if you are or were a federal civilian law enforcement officer. You must also have a valid driver’s license from any state when you are appointed.

Achieve the required education or experience. You must have a minimum bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited college or university. Or you can have at least three years of experience showing the ability to learn and apply a body of facts and deal with people. This can include operating a business or performing in a lead or supervisory capacity. Experience that does not qualify includes general office or mechanical duties, operating equipment or working in trades or crafts.

Pass mandatory tests, including a written test, polygraph exam, medical exam, physical fitness battery and drug test. You must also undergo a background security check.

Complete 17 to 19 weeks of paid training at the CBP Academy in Brunswick, Georgia, if you are accepted. This includes both classroom and field training, as well as a physical fitness regimen.

Achieve proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Spanish, since openings as of 2011 are primarily in Southern California, New Meixco, Arizona and western and southwestern Texas. A few positions are also available in Miami, Florida, and Puerto Rico. You can show your language skill by passing a Spanish language proficiency exam. Otherwise, you must attend and pass a six-week long Spanish immersion class.

Travel to your initial duty station at your own expense after you graduate from the CBP academy. You must complete one year of probation before you become a full agent. With enough experience and training, you may be assigned to management positions or special assignments. Examples of these assignments include canine teams, international assignment and container security.
