How to Make a Big Electromagnet
While it is common to think that making an electromagnet is a task best left to the professionals, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, anyone can make a working electromagnet out of an iron nail, some insulated copper wire and a D battery or generator. The size of the ingredients may change depending on the size of the electromagnet that is needed, but the basic recipe remains the same. Caution is always advised, but in a few simple steps, a big electromagnet that can safely lift heavy objects can be made.

Wrap the insulated copper wire tightly around the iron core, leaving as little space as possible between the loops. Make sure to wrap the copper wire all in one direction, as switching directions while wrapping the iron core reduces the strength of the magnet.
